Why Pot Material Matters
Terracotta is porous, meaning it breathes. Moisture evaporates through the walls of the pot, causing the soil to dry out significantly faster than it would in plastic. Plastic and glazed ceramic pots seal moisture in, requiring less frequent watering but increasing the risk of root rot if overwatered.
The Seasonal Shift
During the spring and summer active growth phases, plants consume more water for photosynthesis and transpiration. In winter, most houseplants go dormant. However, central heating can drastically reduce indoor humidity, causing smaller pots to dry out faster than expected.
